"Marking Time"
Bishop Helen-Ann

‘For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven’ (Ecc. 3:1).

‘Worship is not just a random ‘grocery list’ of things to do when we gather together.  There is a dynamic, a flow, a sequence that makes worship meaningful and satisfying.  There is a beginning, a middle, and an end.  One action prepares for another, and that action flows into the next.’ (John G. Stevens & Michael Waschevski, ‘Rhythms of Worship,’ Westminster John Knox, 2014).

‘No doubt about it: the liturgical year is the arena where our life and the life of Jesus intersect.  In no other spiritual practice is that presence of Jesus so searing, so personal, so clear, so developmental, so immediate.  It is what that presence means to us now, in this life of ours, in this world of ours, that the liturgical year is really all about.  In the liturgical year we walk with Jesus through all the details of His life – and He walks with us in ours.’ (Joan Chittister, ‘The Liturgical Year,’ Thomas Nelson, 2009, p. 16).

On this day, we will explore together the days of our Church calendar, how and why the liturgical year matters, why good worship planning is important, and how our liturgy and the ways in which we ‘mark time’ can be a wonderful tool for sharing the Gospel.  The day will use core material tailored for each group, featuring a mixture of input from the Bishops, group-work, and work-shop opportunities.

‘For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven’ (Ecc. 3:1).

‘Lord, teach us to pray…'

‘He was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples’ (Luke 11:1)

‘We believe that the divine presence is everywhere…But beyond the least doubt we should believe this to be especially when we celebrate the divine office’ (Rule of St. Benedict)

'When we ask where the daily office came from, “the people of Yahweh” is the first answer’ (Robert Benson, ‘In Constant Prayer’, Thomas Nelson, 2008, p. 9).

Prayer is the foundation of our relationship with God, our world, and each other.  The purpose of this day is to explore that more deeply, why it forms the first part of our Episcopal vision, and how we might reconnect with the ancient practice of the divine office.  We will explore prayer as a creative tool for deepening our faith, and providing a firm foundation for all our lives.  The day will use core material tailored for each group, featuring a mixture of input from the Bishops, group-work, and work-shop opportunities.

Synod 2016

SYNOD 2016

TIME: Commencing Friday evening September 23 and concluding Sunday afternoon September 25

MEETING: Cathedral Church of St Peter, 51 Victoria Street, Hamilton

Synods in the Anglican Church of Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia were the first in the Anglican world to enable Bishops to call the House of Clergy and representatives of the House of Laity together to assist them in the governance of the Church.  Bishop Selwyn, the architect of the Constitution of the Church in these islands, was determined that Bishops should not have to govern alone. As he famously said; “It remains then to define by some simple principle the terms of our co-operation. They are simply these; that neither will I act without you, nor can you act without me”.

Lord, Hear Our Prayer

You are invited to join the Whanagamata Anglican Mission for an open-air Morning Prayer service on Sunday 2 October.

Come and be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands, serve the Lord with gladness and come unto the Beach Rd reserve with a rug and a folding chair. Start the day with prayers like “Almighty and everlasting God who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day, defend us in the same by thy mighty power.”

These mighty old prayers come from The English Book of Common Prayer. 1662. So on the Sunday of "Brits at the Beach," some of us once known as the C of E are gathering for Morning Prayer bright and early at 8am down at the Beach Rd reserve, Whangamata.

Bring your Morris Minors, Minis, and Aston Martins. Park and pray. But if it's appropriately and miserably wet, we'll motor through the rain to All Saints Church, at the town end of Beverly Tce, and do Matins there.

Keep an eye on the Facebook page:

https://www.facebook.com/Whangamata.Anglican.1/?fref=ts.

Tam Jam!

Tam Jam 2016
It's back! Tam Jam will be at St Stephen's on Saturday 13th February, from noon until 5pm. Tam Jam is a musical festival 'for the kids, by the kids' providing an opportunity for children in our community to share their talents with friends and family (and have a fun day out). There will be singing, dancing, bands, games, and a lolly scramble. Bring a picnic lunch or gold coins for the BBQ and light refreshments. If you are interested in performing at Tam Jam please contact Darcy Perry (darcy@waikatoanglican.org.nz or 021 905 592).

Tam Jam will keep the same format. A fun day out with an open mic for kids. I am excited to have local soundman Mike Orum helping this year, joining a team that includes Sharlene Woolston as stage manager and a host of volunteers from the St Stephen's church community. Last year the standard of entertainment was amazing, even with the sun shower! We have moved it from the last day of summer to mid-February to make the most of our brilliant weather.

Lay Training: Waikato Bishopric

Bishops' Day: Lay Training - Waikato Bishopric

TIME:  10am to 3:30pm

LOCATION: tbc

PRESENTER: Bishop Helen-Ann

Marking Time

During this session we will explore together the days of our Church calendar, how and why the liturgical year matters, why good worship planning is important, and how our liturgy and the ways in which we ‘mark time’ can be a wonderful tool for sharing the Gospel.  The day will use core material tailored for each group, featuring a mixture of input from the Bishops, group-work, and work-shop opportunities.

Collaborative Ministry: Towards a New Church

Greetings.  For some years now we (Diocese of Auckland) have been running a course for enablers and the constant feedback has been “This is great, and so much of the material is applicable to any ministry setting.”  So we have further developed our course, putting some new material along with the best of the old.

The course provides tools to help you work more effectively with other people, both inside and outside the church.  It will focus on specific skills, as well as outlining the theory and the theology behind them.

Much of the content will follow a workshop design that includes short presentations, case studies, group work, skills development and interaction with the host team of Diocesan Enablers, the Diocesan Ministry Educator, and the Bishop.

This course will enable you to work collaboratively with confidence and skill, and encourage you in your ministry.  I look forward to welcoming you to it.

Bishop Jim (Diocese of Auckland)

THE FEAST 2017

The Feast 2017 (Te Hakari) will engage with the third strand of our episcopal vision: our connection to community.

Social Transformation | August 9: Wednesday 7-9pm

  • Simon Cayley, CEO of the Bishop's Action Foundation

“Not all of us can do great things, but we can all do small things with great love” (Mother Teresa)
Social transformation sounds daunting and something to be tackled by global experts, but it is not.  At the heart of social transformation is justice and the heart of justice is nothing more technically complicated than compassion.  As a Church our challenge is not only to give to God what is due to Him, but to respond to God’s great gift of life and aroha to us by making ourselves a loving gift to others. This session will look at social transformation through this lens using practical examples as a point of reference.

Refugee Resettlement | August 16: Wednesday 7-9 pm

  • Jen Richardson, Red Cross (Waikato) Humanitarian Services Manager

Refugee resettlement globally and specifically in Aotearoa is one of our society’s hottest topics at present. Over the past few years and months, Kiwis have been debating whether or not as a nation we should be accepting more refugees and whether or not we have a responsibility to do more. This presentation will look at sharing some of the great work that is being done currently to support former refugees in the Waikato region and include some of the opportunities and challenges that face former refugees who resettle in our community. This session will also cover the humanitarian work and activities that New Zealand Red Cross is involved in locally including efforts to support residents of Edgecumbe through their recent flooding emergency.
Jen Richardson is the NZ Red Cross Humanitarian Services Manager for the Waikato Bay of Plenty and as part of her role oversees all refugee, community resilience and disaster recovery programmes within the region. Jen has a strong background in youth development and community programmes with long experience in the non profit sector across various agencies.

Non-Stipended Training Day: Taranaki

DATE: Saturday, October 3

TIME: From 10am until 3pm

LOCATION: St Stephen's Lounge, Holy Trinity, Stratford

FOR: Non-stipended / Self-supporting Clergy¹ in the Taranaki Bishopric

PRESENTER: Bishop Helen-Ann

Marking Time

Thy Kingdom Come: Join the Global Wave of Prayer

Join the global wave of prayer

25th May - 4th June

The Archbishop of Canterbury is encouraging Christians of all denominations to join in with a ten day global prayer initiative “Thy Kingdom Come” from Ascension Day to Pentecost.   What began  last year as an invitation from the Archbishops of Canterbury and York to the Church of England has grown into an international and ecumenical call to prayer. Last year more than 100,000 people joined in and in 2017 it’s expected to be on a bigger scale. Launching the initiative, which runs from 25 May to 4 June, Archbishop Justin said:  “When the wind of the spirit is blowing, hoist the sails and go with the wind. It’s not a Church of England thing, it’s not an Anglican thing, it’s a Christian thing.”

In a video to promote the ten days of prayer, Archbishop Justin talks about his faith, why he’s a Christian and why he is asking Christians around the world to join him in praying for more people to know Jesus Christ.  (See video here).  He encourages Christians to #Pledge2Pray, and unite with thousands of others in praying for people to come to faith:  “Jesus prayed at the Last Supper that we, those who follow him, might ‘be one that the world might believe’. We are invited to make a lasting difference in our nations and in our world, by responding to his call to find a deep unity of purpose in prayer.”

Find the Thy Kingdom Come website here.

SYNOD

TIME: Commencing Friday evening October 9 and concluding Sunday afternoon October 11

MEETING: Holy Trinity, Stratford (Corner of Regan St and Juliet St)

Synods in the Anglican Church of Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia were the first in the Anglican world to enable Bishops to call the House of Clergy and representatives of the House of Laity together to assist them in the governance of the Church.  Bishop Selwyn, the architect of the Constitution of the Church in these islands, was determined that Bishops should not have to govern alone. As he famously said; “It remains then to define by some simple principle the terms of our co-operation. They are simply these; that neither will I act without you, nor can you act without me”.

Synod 2015 documents are now available here.

For more information and to register if you are a Synod Representative, please go to the Synod 2015 website.

A mentor is not an expert, or a tutor, but a co-learner with group members who has the added group skills to ensure that a safe, honest, non-judgmental learning environment is fostered.
If you think that you might have what it takes to be a mentor, and/or are interested in in stepping into the adventure that is EfM, please contact either the Executive Officer or an EfM Trainer:

In Conversation

Issues facing  today’s Church

In the clamour of modern lifestyles and politics,
